A 2.0 Litre F Type – are you mad?

So, after the success of the V6 F Type and the SVRs, what would you do?  Now, some people, for some reason, don’t like V8s and prefer smaller, charged engines so Jaguar Landrover fitted a 2.0 litre turbocharged engine into the F-Type   .

Our experience of the F-Type started with a technical introduction by the engineer in charge of the project to make the new engined F Type the car it is.  It is fair to say that the new engine, called the Ingenium, is bristling with technology to deliver the blend of performance and technology Jaguar Landrover were striving to achieve.  It has an electrohydraulic valvetrain.  The technology here was beyond me but basically the ECU controls the valvetrain, taking inputs from the rest of the car, including (mostly!), driver input.  You push down on the loud pedal and some “patented algorithms” do their magic and 300ps comes alive, pushing the car from 0 to 100 in a quoted 5.4 seconds with a top speed of 155mph (241 kmh).

The exhaust manifold is integrated into the cylinder head casing so coolant flowing through ducts in the manifold reduce warm up time and is also parred with the turbo charger to prevent gas pulsation interference.  Ha, I got that from the blurb but what does it mean?  The boost is delivered nearly instantaneously, almost getting rid of turbo lag which means super responsive throttle response.

The vehicle is lighter (the engine alone is 52kg lighter) and as we all know, one key area of performance gain is lightness.  Most of this weight loss is over the front axle which should make the car hold the road well.  The seats are lightweight, the wheels too.  All adds to losing weight and in the right places.

There is a whole host of other technological finery on the engine but at the end of the day, it all culminates in the responsiveness, performance and efficiency of the car as an overall package.

The car itself hasn’t changed much so we were getting into a familiar car space.  In the carpark, we tried the coupes and the soft tops for size; the coupe and the soft top look so different, each with its own character but, the sun was shining so we chose a soft top.  It’d have been rude not to!  And what a gorgeous looking car.

We crawled to the junction, waited for our gap and thought, well, let’s see what she does.  Nice bit of wheel spin out of the junction and a surge of acceleration worthy of any sports car – certainly no turbo lag, just a smooth delivery of a lot of power.  We hadn’t even worked out how to switch the traction control off or the sport mode.  So, no character has been engineered out!

The journey back to the airport was about 150 kilometers, on roads that were a combination of slow, very slow, speed limits through (and far beyond) towns and villages, long sweeping corners, long straights, tight corners, hair pins and tunnels!  We did acceleration tests, just happened to be in the tunnels and the sound is amazing.  We did find the “loud pipe” button (known officially as the “switchable active exhaust” button) and this made a big difference to the sound.  I couldn’t notice any difference in performance but who cares – it sounded amazing!  It is a fast car, no doubt bit we couldn’t use the speed anyway due to restrictive speed limits and the threat of cameras, unmarked cars, etc.  Even though the roads were empty – a crying shame – would love to get this car round Losail and properly see what she does!

The performance of the car is very impressive but the lasting memory for me is that the handling.  This was like a gocart.  It just stuck to the road.  And the best part, opposing this, the car was also a little bit loose.  She wallowed slightly, she spun her wheels, she snapped as the wheels gained traction after spinning; this gave the drive an exciting edge, feeling like you were driving hard, when really you weren’t!!  In today’s world, where foibles such as these are all but engineered out, it is nice to see them remain.  It did not feel that we were in any danger at any time and driving it was great fun!  Just what a two seater sports car should be; fun.

And the audio system is amazing – very important in a soft top!

Jaguar Landrover has a winner in this car and if you are in the market for a two seater, high performance sports car, you could do no better than with the 2.0 litre F-Type.  Pop in to Alfardan and have a look, book a test drive.  The choices then just come down to hard top or soft top and colour (and they have some very funky colours available!).
